During the summertime, it’s likely that you’re going to be driving around a lot more.  Whether it’s to the beach, to go get ice cream or even a road trip, you’re going to be putting a decent amount of miles on your car, thus wearing out your tires over time.

While the weather is usually on our side during the summer months in Rochester, NY and doesn’t call for any inclement weather (fingers crossed), it’s still important to make sure your tires are in pristine condition.  Read on for some safety precautions to take for your tires during the summer.

Check tire pressure

This is absolutely crucial in ensuring your safety.  Under-inflated tires flex more and build up heat which can lead to tire failure, and potentially even a dangerous accident.  Tires that are under-inflated are less fuel-efficient overall and can wear out a whole lot faster. Tires naturally lose air over time and consequently need to be checked and filled on a monthly basis.

Check tread depth

If your tires are used or a few years old, it’s likely that they’ll have some worn spots that have appeared.  Use a penny to check for uneven wear on all four of your tires by sticking a penny upside-down in a tread groove. If Abe Lincoln’s whole head is visible, your tread is worn beyond the legal minimum requirement and it’s time to replace your tires.

Rotate your tires regularly

It is recommended to rotate your tires every 6,000 miles or so.  This will not only increase tread life, but smooth out your ride while driving your car.

Prepare for an accident

It’s important to stay prepared in case of an emergency.  Take the time to inspect your spare tire and consider purchasing a roadside assistance plan.  Some cars come with run-flat tires, which allow for continued driving with no air pressure for up to 60 miles at speeds up to 55 mph, but most vehicles are equipped with either a tire repair kit or a space-saver spare.
