Keeping your tires inflated is crucial to ensuring that they remain in good shape, and have a long lifespan. Your car may notify you if one of your tires is running on lower pressure than the others, but some do not. It’s important to regularly monitor this and make sure that they are all evenly inflated.
Driving on unevenly inflated tires isn’t healthy for your tires, or your car in general. It could cause problems while driving while simultaneously wearing out your tires unevenly. Tire pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). Your vehicle’s manufacturer will recommend a particular level that your tires are supposed to be at. Make sure that your tires are consistently around these levels; doing so will ensure that they perform at the most premium level possible every time you drive.
Having uniform tire pressure across all of your tires will also make sure that your overall ride is safer. For example, god forbid you hit a pothole, you and your car will be better protected from any type of extreme damage if your tires all have an even amount of pressure in terms of pounds per square inch.
At Hooper’s Tire Outlet located in Rochester and Syracuse, we are able to help you check your tire pressure at any time you may need during our business hours. It’s best to try to check your tire pressure at least once a month. As long as you’re on top of it, you’re good to go. If for whatever reason you can’t make it down to our shop, here are some helpful tips that can help you fix your tire pressure yourself.
Step 1
Roll your car up next to the air pump at a gas station or another location, and make sure that it’s close enough so the hose will reach all four tires.
Step 2
Unscrew the valve stem cap of the first tire you plan to fill up and put it somewhere it won’t get lost, like in your pocket.
Step 3
If you have a tire pressure gauge, insert that into the valve and check to see what PSI level each of your tires are at.
Step 4
Place the air hose nozzle over the valve stem and add air in small bursts until the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle has been reached. Something to remember is that a tire will inflate by about one PSI every second and a half or so. Make sure to check if your vehicle requires all four tires to be the same level, or if the front two should be different than the rear two.
Step 5
Continually check your tire pressure until the desired level has been reached. Keep a close eye on this, as you don’t want them to get too over-inflated. If too much air has been added, you can always let some out by pressing the pin in the center of the tire valve with the back of the air hose nozzle. As a rule of thumb, the tire will let out about one PSI for every three seconds the pin is depressed.
Step 6
Put the cap back on the valve and move on to your next tire!
