Are you experiencing issues with your tires but are not exactly sure what’s wrong?  It could be a number of things, depending on your tires’ overall condition.  When purchasing tires in an area like Rochester, NY, it’s critical that you examine the overall quality of what you’re buying beforehand and make sure that everything is a good fit for your vehicle.  Going forward, it’s just as important to continually monitor and inspect your tires to ensure that this quality is maintained for as long as possible.

Here are a few common problems that might be happening with your tires:

Low Pressure

This can be caused by driving with under-inflated tires for an extended period of time.  Long term, this is not good for the overall health of your tires and can possibly be dangerous if not dealt with.  Other than regularly checking your tire pressure, you should be able to tell if this has been a recurring problem by examining the tires themselves.  The tires will be more worn on each of the shoulders because an underinflated tire tends to lift up in the center of the tread while it is in use.

Excess Pressure

On the other hand, if you have been driving on over-inflated tires for a long period of time, you’ll have a different type of problem.  While some people might purposely over-inflate their tires as a precautionary measure, it’s not recommended to do so to ensure that they last for a long time.  Wear and tear can still happen, and you’ll notice it on the center of the tires rather than the shoulders.  Normally, over-inflated tires tend to be more round and the outside is lifted off the ground as a result.  Having the correct pressure will cause the tire to wear evenly across the whole tire.

Feathering

When the edge of each tread rib on the tires each develops a partially rounded edge on one side and a sharper edge on the other, this is known as feathering.  You can tell if this is happening with your own tires by running your hand and feeling which edges are sharp or not.  This is usually caused by having an incorrect toe-in setting.  To fix this, all you need is your tires professionally set correctly, which we can do for you at Hooper’s Tire Outlet.  If this doesn’t fix the problem, then it is usually because of deteriorated bushings in the front suspension, which causes the wheel alignment to shift as the car drives down the road.

Misalignment

This is one of the more common tire issues.  If you happen to notice wear on one edge rather than the other, this may be due to improper wheel alignment rather than tire pressure.
