We’ve all been there: you suddenly get a flat tire and need it replaced ASAP.  You don’t necessarily have the time or luxury of choosing a match to make sure your tires are all the same, and maybe this isn’t the first time this has happened.  So, you opt for the best choice that’s available, regardless of if the tire’s a match or not.

For example, there might be an instance where you need to purchase snow tires for the winter.  In this case, it would be wise to replace all four at the same time to ensure consistency across the board.  However, this is not always the case. You might be in a position to only replace two. Or maybe you just ran over a piece of glass on the street, in which case you would need to replace that singular tire.

But the real question is — is it safe to mix tires on your vehicle?  And if so, are there any downsides to this? There might be a time where there are one, two, three, or even four completely different tires on your car.  In short, this isn’t an ideal situation. Tires vary in size, construction, tread, and durability. These factors affect the overall wear and tear of the tire.

We recommend making sure that all of your tires are the same.  This will make things a lot easier on yourself when it comes to things like checking tire pressure, basic repairs, etc.  If you’re unable to do this for whatever reason, we at least recommend getting them replaced in pairs to avoid any potential problems with suspension systems and transmissions.

When you put on two new tires, you’re essentially mixing tread depths.  This is because the newer tires have more tread than the worn out ones. If the tires you’re buying are different brands, make sure that the tread patterns are similar and are installed on the same axle.
