If you live in the Rochester area, you are likely extremely familiar with the number of potholes that are on our roads. Whether you’re driving on the inner loop or even within the suburbs, they seem to be just about everywhere. Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of groundwater that freezes and thaws within the pavement due to fluctuating temperatures between each season. They can cause severe damage to both your vehicle and tires, so it’s necessary to take proper precautions to try to avoid these as much as possible.
Slooooooow down
The faster you drive over a pothole, the more damage you’re likely to have as a result.
Give enough space
Allow for enough space between you and the car in front of you to give yourself time to react properly to avoid any unforeseen potholes in your path.
Look out for puddles
When coming across a puddle in the middle of the road, be cautious enough to avoid it as you don’t know how deep the puddle actually is.
Hold on tight
Make sure you have a tight grip on your steering wheel and brace yourself for the turbulence that driving over a pothole causes.
Avoid using your brakes
This might seem like the opposite of what your natural reaction is, but hitting your brakes while driving over a pothole can potentially cause even more damage.
Keep your tires inflated
Ensuring that all of your tires are equally full is a great way to defend your vehicle against possible pothole damage through added protection.
Report local potholes
Be proactive and don’t hesitate to notify your local Department of Transportation about any major potholes within your area. If you live in Monroe County, you can do so here.
